Obama is sexy…

“As Mrs. Clinton prepared to formally endorse his candidacy on Saturday, Mr. Obama said the Democratic National Committee would no longer accept donations from federal lobbyists or political action committees. He said he would keep Howard Dean as the national chairman, but was deploying his own advisers to oversee party operations.”

- New York Times

Excuse me while I die of bliss.

You’re not seeing what’s making me so happy?

Deploying his own advisors to oversee party operations.

That. Is. BEAUTIFUL.

Look, party people, I worked for John Edwards in ‘04, and then I worked for Kerry/Edwards. I am a true-believer Democrat. I believe in social programs, government that’s good, and freedom for all. Okay? But man, did John Kerry’s campaign screw itself in ‘04.

It’s not that I think that Kerry should have done anything different with the DNC in particular except TAKE CONTROL.

Obama is making it clear: sit down, shut up, play by my rules, and let’s win this time.

Well, it’s about dang time.

Yeah, baaaaby.

If you read this blog, and you don’t like politics, or democrats, or men named Obama… Well, I’m sorry. It might be a rough few months. I’m more excited than I’ve been in a long, long time. And I love Barack Obama. And we’re going to turn it blue in November. So. Get hyped, people.

Mama?

My mom died when I was 14. (For anyone keeping score, that was back in March of 1999.) That means that, thus far, I have lived for 9 years without a mother.

If you were, on an average day, to ask me about this, I would quickly inform you that I am fine.

Fine with the loss. (She was sick for a long time.)

Fine with her not being here. (I had time to prepare.)

Fine with the fact that my Mama’s gone. (I’m such a liar.)

So, if you were, on an average day, to ask me how I felt about my mom, I would somehow get you to think about something else, anything else.

However, today is not an average day, for some reason. So, even though no one’s asked, I’ll tell you how I feel. I am:

  • Angry at her for not leaving me letters or birthday cards or anything those dying moms in cheesey TV movies always do.
  • Hurt because I can’t bring her back.
  • Sad that I can’t remember what her voice sounded like.
  • Remembering how she smelled. (Some sort of natural essence oils.)
  • Lonely for my Mama.
So, there you have it.
I am finally admitting…
I am not fine.
I miss my mommy.

Frugal Fran Tip #2

I discussed in my last post how much I love beauty products. At the risk of sounding completely and totally shallow, I also love spa services. (Not shallow! Deep! Deep, pretty reader… Yes, you’re soooo pretty…… What? Shallow? Me? Nooo…)

However… Spa Services? Not frugal. Not in the least.

I’ve hit on some ways to save on regular things I need fairly often, as well as a way to splurge:

It’s all about the students.

Normally, a woman that I love from my church cuts my hair. She does such an amazing job. However, now that I’m home for the summer, she’s far, far away. (An hour or more.) Gas is very, very expensive. I had to figure out a way to get my hair cut before I left for camp. The solution? The Aveda Institute of Chapel Hill!

Yes, that’s right. For $19, I have a haircut scheduled next week. A student will do it, under the supervision of his or her teacher. And, best of all, this is the school where my current stylist trained. (I really hope she forgives me for cheating on her… So far away, Stylist I love deeply!)

I am also a sucker for a massage or a pedicure. Now, the Aveda institute is still a wee to expensive for my blood, so, when I’m at school, there’s a local manicure college and a local massage college I hit up on a fairly regular basis. For $20, I can get a 45 minute massage. Mm. Bliss. For $5, I can get a manicure. I’ve never had any problems with the fact that they’re students performing these tasks. They’re usually upper level students, in some sort of clinical class, and they know they’re stuff. I have found, actually, that they tend to be more attentive to my needs, because they are so eager to please.

So, let’s review:

  • Haircut for $19 instead of $50. (Which I gladly pay when I’m closer because I love my stylist!!!)
  • Manicure for $5 instead of $15.
  • Massage for $20 instead of $100.
Yesssss.
Yes, my friend. Wherever you are reading this from, figure out what service you desire, and then google your city name and ” (service) school”. Community colleges, local beauty, manicure, and massage schools, even salons that offer training for young stylists can call be a great source for a cheaper spa service.
It does require planning ahead, as appointment slots usually fill up. And if you have to have your hair done in a very particular way, I would recommend you avoid a student stylist. But for me, she who does not care as long as it’s decent… It works.
Now, of course, all of these things are pretty unnecessary. But I don’t view frugality as being totally without pleasure. Just as figuring out how to afford what I want (within reason!) without breaking the piggy bank.

A Frugal Hint

Okay, so I love beauty products. LOVE. I LOVE THEM.

Shampoo, conditioner, hair product, facial scrubs, smelly good stuff, makeup, makeup brushes… Of course, this is a rather expensive habit to have. Long-time readers will know I have a rather, erm… checkered past when it comes to cash-flow management. However!

Here’s the answer, friends. Drugstore.com. Their little tagline is, “An uncommon drugstore.” Well, check!

First, on all non-prescription purchases, you get 5% back in drugstore dollars, automatically.

Secondly, there are often sales.

Thirdly, you can often times get free stuff!

Fourthly, (did you know you can have a fourthly? well, you can!) there’s no sales tax! Holler!

Fifthly, if you spend over a certain amount (first order, $25 or more; right now, $49 or more) then shipping is free.

So! Let’s review. Money back, sales, free stuff, no tax, and no shipping. What is there to hate?

I spent $25.29, got three facial care products (for less than they have at Wal*Mart), plus a lipgloss. I was gifted with a free bar of neutrogena face wash soap, plus $1.25 in Drugstore Dollars. I ordered all of this on the 30th, they shipped it on the 31st, and I’m supposed to get it by the 3rd. Sweet marie, great deal! I saved on the product, saved on the tax, got free stuff, and didn’t even have to go to the store!

And that, my friends, is the frugal tip of the day.

Hmm, how’d that posting every day work out?

Not at all, kids! NOT AT ALL.

I’m just not built for it! Especially not during May, ala the month of exams, moving home, cleaning the entire house, rearranging furniture, preparing for camp, taking three summer school classes online, and hanging out with my father.

Oh, and deciding my immediate future after graduation next year.

Yep. It’s been a busy month.

And the pressure to post every day! People, I don’t mind telling you, it makes me crazy. I just can’t do it. It MAKES ME CRAZY.

I have lots of topics to discuss, so help me out and leave a comment about which (if any) you care to hear about:

  • De-pack-ratting your life
  • Summer school classes and cheap textbooks
  • The current economy
  • My current plans for career/job
  • My new interest in money and financial management
My goodness, I’m just a fount of fascination.
Do tell, if anyone cares.
