Dewey needs your help… What’s a decimal to do?

When I was a kid, I used to spend a lot of time in my local public library. In fact, sometimes, if I was too sick to go to school, but not sick enough to have to stay in bed, my mom would drop me off at the public library and go to work, and I’d spend the whole day there. Ditto for weekends she had to work. I didn’t mind – in fact, it was bookworm heaven. I’d read book after book, snack illicitly on a cookie from my bag, and chat with other kids in the library. I read volumes of Nancy Drew, the Saddle Club, and Sweet Valley High. I explored encyclopedias, devoured tomes on horses, foreign countries, ballet, and gymnastics. I chatted with the librarians, and enjoyed the cushy chairs, free magazines, and quiet freedom. Public libraries are so special and so wonderful.

So, Hurricane Katrina, that bitch, created a lot of problems in New Orleans, which we’re all very aware of. The Gulf Coast has been sadly forgotten, and something didn’t even occur to me until recently:

The libraries.

Oh, my God, kids.

The LIBRARIES.

Books and water just don’t mix. The Harrison County Library system lost over 100,000 volumes, and most of their facilities. I can’t imagine the devestation, not just for the library itself, but for the community members. The library has always been central to my life – I can’t imagine losing everything, all my personal books, and having no place to even borrow books from.

SO!

There’s an upswing to all this talk of devestation and destruction.

You can go here and help:

It’s an internet book drive! How fun is that? Please donate if you’re able – it would mean so much to so many.

As they say over at Dewey Donations… Libraries are sexy. Spread the Word.

"All I’m looking for is you…"

Why is it, I wonder, that I’m always the one who cares more than everyone else?

Why is it that I’m always the friend making the phone calls, leaving the unanswered voicemails, buying the gifts, arranging the outings?

Why is it that I seem to need the people in my life much more than they need me?

What is it I do wrong, I wonder?

Why is it I don’t seem to make the kind of friends that other people make?

Accomplished!

I have managed to, after many, many years of wanting to do it, put allllllll my photographs into albums! Now, I always have ambitions of making those beautiful, complicated scrapbooks like you see on TV and in magazines, but I never quite manage. I always spend a (not so small) fortune on scrapbooking supplies and never do anything with them. Now, I finally have, at the very least, organized my photos.

A bazillion pictures split three ways:

- Run of the mill High School pictures
- Family photos
- Special Pictures (Riding, Governor’s School, History Club, and Pets)

It’s amazing how happy it makes me to get this done – FINALLY. It also makes me want to take more pictures of my “college experience”, since I didn’t turn up too many of those. I also need to order some pictures (prom & club) from my online service that haven’t been printed off.

How about you guys? How do YOU handle your photos? Any scrappers out there?

Just call me Nanny

I’ve taken a job as a nanny for a great family. It’s got a variation of hours, cute kids, nice pay, fun activities, etc.

Here’s the cast of characters:

Mom (M) – A great lady with a lot of interesting things to say about politics/religion/world affairs. I like her a lot. She’s also a cool mother, who seems determined to raise her kids well, and with open minds. GREAT sense of humor.

Dad (D) – Seems busy, equally committed to raising cool kids. Nice sense of humor.

Big Brother (BB) – Quiet, a little shy. You can tell he wants to be friends, but isn’t quite sure how to go about the situation. Around 9.

Little Brother (LB) – Very outgoing, tiny little sprite of a boy. He is your friend, loves you right away. Love ‘em and leave ‘em kinda fellow. Likes to build things.

Both boys seem to be incredibly creative. They like going to museums and playing imagination games. I think I’m going to try to cook with them, and do a lot of craft projects. I certainly think I’ll have my hands full!

So far, I’m planning on:

- A trip to the Museum of Life and Science
- A trip to the Planetarium and the new Chapel Hill Children’s Museum
- A trip to Exploris
- A trip to the $1.50 theater
- Cooking expeditions.
- Pooltime in the afternoons.

Any suggestions?
