Dolley Madison’s a hot mama…

So, Washington, D.C. was incredibly fabulous. My good friend Matt (high school buddies!) and I left home around 8am and made it to DC around 1:30. We got a wee bit lost and took a scenic tour of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. It was extremely beautiful and I realized there are a great deal of recreation opportunities in and around D.C. Who knew?

We checked into our hotel, the very nice M Street Hotel. It was undergoing renovation, but still swanky. Hardwood floors, big rooms, free internet. It was a pretty sweet deal. It was only a few blocks away from Dupont Circle.

We had 2:30 tickets to the Spy museum so we hiked a bazillion blocks in the heat to get over there. The worst part was attempting to cut in front of the White House. I’m pretty sure that my head is probably in about a gazillion tourists photos. We made it to the Spy museum, got our tickets, had a spot of lunch in the “SpyCafe” and then headed in to see the exhibits. It was very crowded and it seemed like a cool place, but the exhibits were too based around videos. If I wanted to watch a documentary, I would have watched a documentary, okay?

So, we headed back to the hotel. We rested, relaxed, checked up on things, showered, and headed out. We went to Dupont Circle, and had dinner at this delicious place called Potbelly Sandwiches. It was AMAZING. It had started to rain, so we headed to a little bookstore/restaurant down the street called Kramer Books & Afterwords. I had pecan pie, Matt had a beer and pie.

We walked down to the White House, just to see it at night. It was great but it started to rain and we got COMPLETELY soaked on the way back to the hotel. Both of us were a bit bitter, though amused, and tired by the time we got back “home”.

The next day, we had a delicious brunch at the same bookstore. It was a huge plate of food, plus free juice and muffins, for $15. Bangin’. We stopped in on the Dupont Farmer’s market, checked out of the hotel, and drove down towards the Smithsonian. We managed to find parking within a couple of blocks and headed over to the American History museum.

It was okay – a lot of exhibits were closed due to an impending renovation. We went to the Natural History museum but by that time, my feet were screaming in pain, so I mostly sat around. After that, we drove around Georgetown and admired the really expensive town houses. It was seriously gorgeous and we were both highly impressed.

We headed home to North Carolina after that. Traffic was fine, and we made it home safely.

A few trip highlights:

“Okay, so this is Dolley Madison Avenue. Can’t be that bad! It’s named for Dolley Madison!” (Matt when we’d gotten lost on the parkway.)

“Matt, are you sure you know where we’re going?” I asked while standing two feet in front of our destination.
“It’s just all a mystery to you, isn’t it?”

In other news, I’m going back to school seriously soon. I move in August 7th. I’m collecting all sorts of things to make my room look fabulous. I got bedding from the Target simply Shabby Chic Collection. (Well, I got it off e-bay.)

I’ll post pictures when I’m all moved in and fabulously set-up.

Holy crap, I didn’t know….

…. That this time existed.

It’s before six am and I’m awake. But I’ve been asleep.

I’m heading out of town for the weekend, taking a little two day trip with one of my best friends in the whole world. Too bad we have to leave at the ass crack of dawn!

In other news, I finished up my nanny job with the Family Who Was Mean to Me.

They gave me a big, big, big bonus. That was nice.

They still suck.

Okay, guys! Have a good weekend! I’ll be back Sunday evening and will post pictures and such then.

I think…

I think I’m a bad nanny.

My feelings are just really hurt by this whole situation I’m in right now. I know that it’s almost over (tomorrow is my last day) but it’s still really upsetting me and making me feel like I’m a complete and total idiot when it comes to dealing with kids and their parents.

The expectations are too difficult to meet. I don’t see how it’s possible to keep lazy kids both actively engaged and happy. They want to sit around and do nothing but read or draw. If I make them do other stuff, they get mad. Mom wants the kids engaged and happy. How?

The kids are rude. I do not appreciate the old “You’re not the boss of me” routine. Um, yes, I am. I asked politely, now do as I asked. Especially when it comes to things like not walking down the middle of a street in downtown Raleigh at rush hour? Mmkay? Thanks.

The parents don’t seem to respect my time. Since when did “We’ll be home at six” equal me not leaving until 8pm?

Our ideals are just too different. Yes, I can respect political differences and all that, but when Mom comes home ranting about the “homosexual lesbians” at the restaurant that day, teaching her kids a legacy of hate, I draw the line. Not to mention I think that sometimes kids are unhappy and you have to let them be that way. (Not in matters of life and death of course, but if a kid doesn’t want to go to the park and that’s the activity for the day, they can suffer for ten minutes until they start having fun.)

I just don’t like them.

It makes me feel terrible.

Woot!

So, the family I’m nannying for?

Done.

Well, not quite. Friday is my last day.

They “might” need me for another week in August, but I’m going to be unavailable. Period.

Because, I got another job, for the next two weeks.

Watching a cool little girl in the afternoon. She can be obnoxious, but she can take it if you tell her to hush the fuss.

Sweet!

New Blog Design & Random Thoughts…

So, I tip my hat to Angela of Adventures of a Nanny ( for the heads up on where to get a bangin’ blog design. I love it. I might change it, there’s another one I’m thinking about, but we’ll see.

(If anyone knows how to insert links into blogger posts, please let me know.)

Now, for the random thoughts:

This blogging thing is cool.

I’m making friends from every kind of strange place! (All of these people are on the blogroll, go see!)

*A mother & daughter team in Canada (Mary P & Haley rock!) Haley is one cool cookie with a lot of interesting things to comment on, as well as wacky adventures of University life. Mary P. has been my childcare guru and I am in love with one of her adorable former charges.

*A fellow nanny named Angela (of the above mentioned Adventures of a Nanny) who is cool and bloggy and helpful AND leaves comments.

*Hilary, over at the Bad Penguin, wins my love for the name of her blog. Seriously. I collect penguins. Did you know that?

The list goes on and on and on. Strong, beautiful woman trying to have children, raising children, and being cool as hell in the process. The kind of women I want to grow up to be like. I admire all of them so much, even though I vastly disagree with some of them on politics or child rearing or whatever else.

This blogging thing absolutely rocks.

(also, randomly, I just figured out if I switched browsers I could add bold, italics, links, and all sorts of fun stuff! SWEET. Thanks Angela!)

New Year’s Resolutions & More

No, you’re not going crazy. I am writing New Year’s Resolutions in July.

I’m a student. August kicks off my “new year” in the academic sense, and considering my life is ruled by academia, that’s how it is.

So, here are my “New Year’s Resolutions”

Blog Related:

1. Figure out how to make my blog prettier. It’s ugly and I don’t know how to do anything about that.
2. Update more reguarly.
3. Update my blogroll.
4. Comment on what I read.

Real Life Related:

1. Stop procrastinating so miserably in school.
2. Stop oversleeping and missing classes!!
3. Go to bed earlier to help with #3.
4. Keep an organized calendar. Somehow.
5. Don’t overcommit myself.

We’ll see how these work out.

In other news, the kids I nanny for are driving me insane, as are their parents. They’re all great people, but the family dynamic is one that I just can’t seem to comprehend or become a part of. Feedback is not happening, and it makes me feel like I’m constantly doing a lousy job. How am I supposed to know what I’m doing wrong if no one tell me?

Only one more week of this, and it’s over. But that brings up another major concern: money, of course. College is just too expensive. Plus books, gas, paper, food, so on and so forth.

It makes me want to run home and hide under the covers some times!!

They See Me Rollin’

So, today, I was sleepily sitting in the living room at the Casa del TWL/DWL and my friend, E. suggested we go get ice cream. We (TWL, Jojo, E, & Me) piled into Jojo’s two honda and headed for the ice cream place. Midway there, we decided to check out this phenomena known as “Sheetz.”

On the way there, Jojo popped in some music and we began…

Ridin’ Dirty.

This song is infectious, hilarious, and delightful.

As is Sheetz. Have you ever been to a gas station where, at 10:30 at night, you can have food custom made for you? Delicious, steaming food. Seriously good. There’s a jelly bean bar. There’s nifty architecture, cool interior design, and round booths. That’s right. Round booths.

We’re going to have bible studies there. I’m going to go on dates there. It is my place. My new home. I am a Sheetz convert.

Word.

“They see me rollin’, they hatin’, patrollin’, tryin’ to catch me ridin’ dirty…”
