Pick me, Pick me!

I just applied for an amazing internship sort of thing with MTV — to cover the 2008 presidential elections as a street reporter here in North Carolina. Raise your hand if you think that sounds absolutely amazing?

More information here.

Dear Selection Peeps: If you’re reading this, I would be amazing. People love me! They really do. I’m a funny girl. With lots of stuff to say. Pick me, pick me!

twitterpated.

adjective.
“An enjoyable disorder characterized by feelings of excitement, anticipation, high hopes, recent memories of interludes, giddiness, and physical over stimulation which occur simultaneously when experiencing a new love. These feelings take over without warning, usually at odd times (such as at a check-out line), with or without the partner present, and make it difficult to concentrate on anything but romance. They interfere with work and safe driving, but should be experienced at least once in every person’s lifetime.”

The Stewart Curse

Okay, so let me tell what I did and why it was a very, very bad idea. I bought this cute little magazine called “good things for the home: easy ideas for every room – from the editors of martha stewart living”. Okay! Sweet!

Good things? Easy things? Hey! You’re singing my song.

Yeah, right. These “easy ideas” all include serious building, sewing, embroidering, and so forth. To me, an easy idea is a coat of paint or an iron-on patch. Not a hand-embroidered “french knot” SHEET for your bed. Honestly.

I’m going to start my own e-zine. I’m not kidding. ACTUAL easy, cheap things to do at your house. What if you don’t own a sewing machine to spend six hours sewing a bazillion tiny ribbon stripes onto plain white pillows for your couch? What if you aren’t able to just take the top of something off with a saw and drill on a new top? Honestly.

Anyone want to write for my new mag?

(Okay, I don’t know if I could really start a magazine. But it’s a thought.)

I’m having one of those days…

Where the fight is too hard.

Where I’m so tired, I can’t seem to figure life out.

Where I’m watching the same scenes in Grey’s Anatomy over and over again because they make me cry and all I want to do is cry.

Where people aren’t answering their phones — because I’m not calling.

Where everyone’s walked out and I’m alone.

I’m just having one of those days.

why I love North Carolina politics…

“Well, some reckon Speaker of the House ought to be a full time job but I still keep up my farm duties, my law firm duties.”

- Joe Hackney

NC Speaker of the House (D-54th District)

His farm duties? You’re awesome, Mr. Hackney. Just awesome.

oh, my! — updated.

Today at 3:30, I have an interview about a part-time nanny position for a five month old. The mom works at my college and would be willing to work around my schedule, so it sounds like it could be a pretty good fit for my needs (and the new expenses of my big girl apartment.)

Keep your fingers crossed! I could certainly use the money.

UPDATE: Woot! I’m in. The baby is so super cute and Mom seems cool. I start on Tuesday. I’m only working 10 hours a week and the salary is pretty sweet ($100 a week.) I work three hours a day on Tuesday and Thursday and then four hours on Friday. That’s a lot of extra money per month – it’ll help greatly in… you know. Financial goals and whatnot.

Running up that hill…

Holy smokes, is anyone else as excited as I am about The War? This documentary by Ken Burns (!) is going to be phenomenal. I’ve seen the commercials, and oh, mercy, am I a sucker for the Ken Burns style. I absolutely cannot wait.

It seems to me that the hype about “The Greatest Generation” has passed, or at least significantly died down. That makes me unbelievably sad. While the hype was obnoxious, the story of a generation that saved the world is valuable in teaching us all a lesson in character in preserverence. I am not, forone instant, pretending this was a utopia. But it was a time in which individuals understood their responsibilities to the greater good. I’ll be interested  to see if his documentary covers the Internment Camps at all. It’s all too tempting to gloss over the devastating aspects of history when it’s more convenient to look at the heroic parts.

These guys are dying. One day, in our lifetime, there will be a headline: “Last World War II Soldier dies.” Imagine the sadness that will be. Thank goodness for someone like Ken Burns, and for lesser knowns who labor to organize memories, to take oral histories, to seek to preserve and understand the very ETHOS that pervaded a nation and brought victory.

Yeah. That’s why I’m a history major. Because I go all geeky about this sort of thing.

Ken Burns. The War. September 23rd. Check your local PBS listings.

(No, I won’t discuss how very annoyed I am by the jack-a-ninnies who object to profanity used by WORLD WAR II VETERANS to describe their experiences. Get a life, dude.)

Explain to me, please…

… The hilarity of opening the dryer to find that a sweater has gotten hooked on the latch of the door, and therefore, for the first five minutes the dryer actually did run, spun wildly, stretching it irreversably out of shape before bunching up enough to pop the door open. Thusly, leaving all the clothes still wet.

… Why the owners of my apartment put an outdoor lighting fixture in my hallway.

… Why I dropped my keys (including my automatic door opener) in the washing machine today, but it still works.

…Why I accidentally bought king sized sheets to replace the sheets I’d just returned and had to return yet ANOTHER set of sheets. Yes. That’s three sets of sheets in two days.

…Why I can never seem to actually get my dishes done in a timely manner.

…Why there is continually dirt on my kitchen floor. Where does it come from? Who puts it there? How can I make it stop?

…Why some people choose to tailgate you and honk obnoxiously — even when you are already going 75 in a 60 (MPH) zone.

…How a three day weekend seems to mean more work than a regular two day one.

…Why chocolate covered cheesecake tastes so good?

…Why I couldn’t come up with a real blog post so you get this instead.
