Social Justice
Bobby Kennedy, aka MY HERO, said:
“It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope.”
He also said, more simply, “As long as there is plenty, poverty is evil.”
Another hero of mine, you know, Jesus – fondly referred to as the JC around here – said:
“You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Luke 18:22)
Wha? Sell everything you have and give it to the poor?
Well, shit.
I haven’t made it there. I struggle with issues of money management, tithing, charity, and all such things. Of course, it’s certain JC wasn’t suggesting that ONLY money matters. In fact, I would argue that money matters the least. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t matter. I just think we angst and antagonize when we should be thinking differently.
Social justice is a lifestyle. I talk about it a great deal around here. I’m constantly learning new things and exploring new avenues for my passions, such as:
Invisible Children. Yeah. There are kids in Uganda with no homes, no hope, and no future. Unless somebody does SOMETHING. I’ve written about it here.
I’m always thinking about how to live a more environmentally sustainable lifestyle, even though I love my SUV and junk food makes me happy. (Check out the idea of Community Supported Agriculture. Pretty cool, huh?)
I despise war. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing. This time around, there’s not even really any decent protest music. At least Vietnam bore a musical movement. Beyond the War in Iraq, though… The war in Uganda (See: Invisible Children) and about a gazillion conflicts like it around the world suck. Peace & Reconciliation, please. Thanks.
There’s more. There’s always more. I can’t care about it all. (See this post.)
But I’ll never stop caring.
I promise.
